Halal Subway

As a Muslim kid growing up in the UK, you often find yourself day-dreaming about the day McDonalds or KFC will become Halal. When I was young, all we had in terms of Halal places were cheap fried chicken shops and run-down curry houses. Eating at a Halal restaurant meant you were relegated to places that were… well… pretty awful!
I suppose that’s why when I went to Morocco a few years ago, I went to McDonalds every day just to savour the ability to do that.
That said, I still remember the moment when I was a young kid, and being told that in London, there was a Halal Subway. I felt like Harold and Kumar. WHITECASTLE!

It was shortly after hearing this fantastic news that my brother called me to say there was an opportunity to work with him at the bank he was employed at, for some work experience. My oh my! I was so excited that I’d be in the same city as THE Halal Subway.
I got myself a steak and cheese Sub. It was delightful. I think just the idea of biting into some meat, whilst sitting in an establishment as big as Subway was enough to amaze me. It was kinda surreal. Here I was, sitting at one the biggest, most famous food chains, and I’m eating meat! Whoa!

As I took each bite, I clearly remember thinking… this is so weird. But I was over the moon. As time passed, and my life progressed from being a little kid to being a student in Sixth Form, I really missed my Halal Sub. As my friends would go and get their steak and cheese or chicken teriyaki, I was stuck with tuna or the famous Veggie Delight!
Then we moved house again. This time, we lived closer to the city centre of Leicester. And I was within a short distance of 3 Halal Subways!
For people living in Leicester, I suppose this is kind of a… yeah so what?
But... It’s easy to forget our past. Our deep, inherited, tough, long, hard battle to finally have good Halal places to eat. Our forefathers stood on these very streets, having to endure deep fried chicken whilst sitting on hard chairs, over dirty, unhygienic tables. We should be eating our Halal Subs with gratitude and humility. For let it not be forgotten! We have struggled! And we have won!
