Tipu Sultan serves authentic Pakistani food ensuring that there really is no shortage on choices. Feel free to whip on some heels without worrying about that painful long walk from the car to the restaurant because yes, that’s right this place has a car park!!!  It’s insane how you walk in and you automatically KNOW this is the most beautiful restaurant in the city. The exquisite combination of the deep purple and crisp gold complimented with the high ceilings giving you the impression that this is the creme de la creme.

With that though, you would think this place is waaaaaay out of the uni price range?

WRONG! Monday to Friday using your Halal Honours Card, you can eat like a king but get a crazy 25% off!

DISCLAIMER! I for one don’t eat too much chilli so everything that was selected was with the thought in mind that I didn’t want to end up with heartburn.

Tipu Sultan is HMC certified... AND HHC certified!

I have to start with the mocktails. The beautiful rainbow of colours has always caught my attention. I’ve always been someone to go for the tropical fruits like mango, pineapple and passion and tend to stay away from those boring forest fruits so naturally I picked the “passion punch” which left me savouring every sip and nibbling on the passion fruit seeds! However, perks of writing this means I got to cheekily try everyone’s drink and I must say the strawberry mojito was the winner for me! Probably one of the best mocktails I’ve tasted. I will 100% be ordering this one next time.

Tipu Sultan have such a huge range of starters. The menu consists of two pages just for starters with a great description detailing exactly what you’ll be getting. What shocked me was how much choice there is for vegetarians! Generally, I find that places like this don’t necessarily cater for vegetarians and if they do then you’ll get only one or two rubbish options. For starters we ordered the chops, wow the chops. I for one rate chops based on two things:

a) the taste

b) how elegant I can look when wrestling the meat off the bone with my teeth!

Juicy tender meat that falls off the bone without breaking my jaw always goes down well and this most definitely ticked those boxes. You get the choice of Lamb Chops and Sultani Chops. Both are amazing but me being ridiculously weak on spice, felt that the Lamb Chops may be a safer bet. You get four chops in one portion and the size of them means that you could share this portion between two people.

As a second starter between the four of us we had to order the papri chaat. I was amazed at the portion size! For only £4.45 (excluding HHC discount) you can easily share this between four before physically stopping yourself with the fear that if you eat any more you’ll have no room for mains.

For mains the menu really does leave you baffled with what you want to eat. I particularly am so thankful for the spice level indicators used (for my now obvious inability to take chilli!) After a lot of deliberating, we decided to get the chicken tikka masala, lamb korma and daal makhani. I really was pleasantly surprised by the lamb korma as I’m alien to a korma being served with anything but chicken! But wow, even with the lack of chilli, it was bursting with flavour with that creamy texture and the gorgeous touch of sweetness. The curry was served in a slightly bigger dish but same price as the chicken tikka masala which means you get more for your money!

Once again, there is a great selection of vegetarian curries, but I love lentils and so naturally was inclined to go for the daal makhani. The flavours were sharp and the curry was aromatic – definitely one to try.

The chicken tikka masala is DIVINE. Let’s just say that if you ever go there you HAVE TO try it. The creamy masala does not fail on flavour. Combined with the fluffy, warm naan it really does leave you licking your fingers. If you are on a tight budget and want to make sure you don’t waste your money on something you may not like, then this is the dish for you! It’s safe, it’s tasty and there is plenty in one portion (enough for two to share!)
